Taree Landcare invite all present and future environmental custodians to roll up their sleeves, grab their shovels and celebrate National Tree Day with a tree planting day near the corner of Petken Drive and Anita Close, Taree West on Sunday 1 August between 9.30am and 12 noon.
National Tree Day is an Australian initiative aimed at promoting community planting of native trees and shrubs to protect and enhance our environment. Since 1996 over 2 million volunteers have planted over 13 million native trees and shrubs across Australia.
Taree Landcare Co-ordinator Helen Hannah said that National Tree Day is an inspirational event with the community planting local native species to provide food and shelter for our wildlife and increasing native biodiversity. “National Tree day helps combat the loss of habitat that’s threatening much of our wildlife, especially in urban areas. Participants will be rewarded with the knowledge that they are helping to improve the visual aspect at this Taree west location, improving the water quality in the Manning River and creating a more sustainable urban environment,” Ms Hannah said.
Taree Landcare are focusing tree-planting activities towards improving parks and natural reserves so that the whole community can access and enjoy the enhanced surrounds.
Greater Taree City Council is pleased to be supporting National Tree Day. Council’s Media and Community Relations Officer, Val Schaefer praised the Taree Landcare Group for the activities planned as they help to establish a connection between people and their natural environment as well as instilling a sense of community pride in local parks and reserves. “Beyond the personal satisfaction of knowing you are reducing carbon emissions and combating climate change, you will be beautifying your surroundings.”
The day’s activities are aimed at all ages and will include planting, mulching and watering trees and generally enjoying the social event. National Tree Day is a great opportunity for individuals, families, community groups and especially new residents interested in the environment to become involved.
Taree Landcare ask those attending to bring a hat and drinking water and wear appropriate outdoor footwear. To cap off a productive day the Lions Club will be cooking up a delicious BBQ lunch.
Taree Landcare wish to sincerely thank NSW Environment Trust, Midcoast Water and the Department of Lands and Property Management.
